About Me
I grew up on a small dairy farm in Saskatchewan with three sisters. I spent a lot of time playing outdoors with my youngest sister actively using our imaginations. My older sisters would read to us at bedtime and as I grew older, I read a variety of books from Beverly Cleary, Jigsaw Jones and Nancy Drew mysteries and of course Anne of Green Gables. I began reading to younger children while babysitting for neighbours. Reading to children became a highlight! After receiving my Bachelor of Education from the U of S in 1991 I moved to Calgary and became a director of a daycare for 5 years before landing my job as preschool teacher for 14 years. During this time, I began volunteering for a program at the CanLearn Society called Share the Magic and soon became the coordinator of two literacy programs for this nonprofit organization. After 5 years I decided to lessen my load, continue as a volunteer reading to preschool children and teach a few sessions of a literacy program for grade one and twos. This allowed me more time to spend with my various hobbies – baking, quilting, gardening, scrapbooking and pursuing my goal of writing children’s books.
I wanted to write a preschool children’s book to encourage playing outdoors, using senses to discover the world around us and instill a love of reading in the early years. A book that would be easy for children to memorize and “read” to family, friends and even their pets.
